Tips & Tricks: Fast Targetting

Ever noticed you can target with one click ?

Either on the scanner overview or by clicking an object in space:

Hold the CTRL (Strg for German keyboard users) key and click the object you wish to target.

No longer gobbling with some context menus and right mouse buttons ...

BTW: another fast way of targetting is clicking the module (miner, laser, autocannon, jammer, scrambler - whatever) and then click the target - the target is locked and the module is used on it.

Ahhhh ....

Lately during some missions for Amarr Construction (yes also I as minmatar need a good standing with the owners of the refining plant in our HQ) the asked me to DRIVE TOURISTS to space...

TOURISTS !!!

Hope the get space-sick during the drive with my 3,500 m/s Vigil - that will be some extra curves...

A View on PVP

I am personally as miner and manufacturer not so fluent in the profession of putting others to dust. But as miner one has much time to search for things - so I invite you to read this excellent PVP Guide in the official EVE forums (If one hasn't already).

Woot ....

hehe - first time I login as the third player on the server.

I guess CCP hardware now has a problem as thousands of folks storm the server ... a real hard test case ;)

A glance of hope

Hmm, maybe it will work again ?

With a working Market ? Questions over Questions ...

Server down

*Sigh*.

Tranquility is still offline, my easter weekend is going down ...

What started with a "quick unscheduled" reboot now lasts ~ one hour ...

A view on Mining - Part III - Basics

In our little Basic Training we will now get to a point NO other profession can make inside of EVE - getting money without working for it ;)

Yes - you read right - NO (or very less) work and get money for it ...

The so-called AFK Mining

This one is called from the good 'ol acronym AFK (away from keyboard). The idea is the following:
  • get in a secure system (>= 0.9 security) with an industrial
  • jump to a asteroid belt
  • lock the asteroid of you choice
  • tune in the miner
  • wait until the industrials cargo is full
  • sell the ore (or the refined minerals)
With this tactic you can earn money without having real to work for it. Also you are safe from ore thiefs - there is no way to plunder and industrial in hisec space except shooting it and THAT IS A BAD IDEA in hisec space...

Nevertheless there are some drawbacks to this method. You have to choose either more valuable ore (Scordite, Plagioclase, Pyroxerces etc.) or the common Veldspar to mine. The advantage of getting Veldspar is, that if you have locked a BIG roid (diameter 5km and above) you can quite a time mine it AFK. More valuable roids tend to be smaller - so it could be you have to switch targets all 20 minutes or so (I call this semi AFK mining). Also a "Survey Scanner" (scans the ore makeup of a roid) comes handy.

With this method one can make easily large sums of money (compared with the work you have to afford).

Why I share this insight with you ?

It easy - the more money you have, the more you can spend on my goods ;)

A view on Mining - Part II - Basics

Continuing or little series about "The Art of Mining" our next serious question will be:

What to mine ?

As said before - there are two type of miners - the "planners" and the "I just mine" miners.
To help the "planners" a little if have created a little overview what to expect from which type of ore you mine. Please take in account the chart is based on figures from my current skills - which are quite good for mining. The main figures are based on mining with a cruiser (I took no BS since not every one has one - but a cruiser is affordable) with a mining yields (ore you get) of 486m³ per minute.

Profits from mining - based on average ore/mineral prices in the GENESIS region:

You see on the chart above you are able to get for one hours work the equivalent value of an average from around 1,500,000 - 3,000,000 ISK per hour from low value ore (Veldspar, Scrodite, Plagioclase etc.) up to astonishing 22,500,000 (!) ISK per hour from high value ores like Crokite, Bistot etc.

So is it so easy like the chart suggests ?

Mine five hours and earn 112,500,000 ISK ?

Unfortunatly not - the high value ores are in security 0.0-0.3 (this means every guy who don't likes you there could easily shot you - mining lasers are no good weapons ... and nearly all 0.0 systems are greedily guarded by PvP'ers) and by mining low value ores in high security systems you suffer losses due to ore thieves.

Also the figures are based on ONE HOUR of mining - not taken into account the time you need to:
  • haul the ore to a station
  • fight off some hamsters attacking you
Taken this times in consideration you come down to an effective mining time of 60-75% of an hour. Also a careful consideration of the place you mine should be taken into the planning. Choose the spot you mine carefully. All the ore you need should be in range of your mining lasers (12km for Miner II's). Creating dozens of cans can be a pain in the a** if you have to haul them all.

But I hope the chart gives you a quick peek into the possible profits you can get from mining. Also if you (or some corp lads are building ships & equipment) you can save great sums of money by mining the minerals you need by yourself instead of buying them from some greedy miners ;)

A view on Mining - Part I - Basics

Preface

This wil be the first part of a series with "Mining" as the general topic. This guide should help corp mates and beginners ( the so called "noobs") to get a glance at the art of mining.

Your Pal,
Eol Ruin

Basics

There are two types of miners - miners who "just"mine and miners who tend to plan their mining. Sure its easy to fly to a belt and start up your mining lasers ... wait ... move ore from cargo to can and haul it sometimes to a reprocessingplant of their needs.

But with a skillfull planning one can easily optimize his/her mining profits.

Some points to consider for the beginning miner:

Use a proper ship

For mining you will always need two types of ships:
  • a miner (frigate, cruiser, battlecruiser or even a battleship) - the ship you fit mining lasers on to get vast amounts of ore mined as short time as possible
  • a hauler (an industrial - the more cargo and the more speed the better)
The considerations for choosing the miner will be the following:
  • as many turret hardpoint as possible - the more turrets - the more ore per minutes
  • much CPU power - each Miner II takes 90 CPU power - so you have to have a ship that is capable of support that much. It has no use if you have seven hi-slots and 150 CPU ... also learn "Electronics" (5% more CPU per level) and "Electronic Upgrades" so you can fit a Co-Processor in your ship
  • mining alone or in groups: depending on the place you want to mine (hi-sec or low-sec) and especially if mining alone you will have to take in account you will have to protect yourself - so get some decent weaponery on you miner. Also a possiblity would be having two ships in a system - One Miner and one fighting menace to defeat the hamsters (slang for NPC pirates) which are attacking you
  • take ship boni into account: There are ships out there like the scythe (minmatar cruiser) for example which have a mining bonus. For each Minmatar Cruiser Skill level you have - the Scythe gets 20%(!) mining bonus. For example if you have the skill to level four you get 80% bonus - so the three Miner II's on the Scythe count as 5.4 (3 * 1.8) Miner II's. Thats more than I can achieve for example with the minmatar battlecruiser, the Cyclone.
Considerations for the hauler are easy:
  • as much cargo room as possible
  • as much speed as possible
Also consider creating some bookmarks for easy hauling if mining at larger scale operations - if you can save, say 3 minutes per haul, by using you proper bookmark you save yourself 1/2 an hour after 10 hauls. And you will constantly haul in a corp mining OP ...

Nifty little creatures

Last Night, during one of my mining OP's I got a little bored and tried to get a shot of a miners best friends. The nifty little mining drones. Ever noticed that it is nearly impossible to see one of this mechanical thingies ?

They are just to small to be seen - even if you zoom in as much as possible.

So most people know them only by their icon representation:

Fortunatly I was able to get a closer look after readjusting my cams on my trusty Typhoon.

See here a closer shot:

and a very close shot:

Ever seen such a close look to those valuable miners helpers - on the shot above they are chewing some jaspet.

Well ...

The trip to italy has been shorter than expected ...

Due to rainy weather (hell, I was in italy - not in GB) I cancelled my stay much faster than I originally planned too.

However - kind of relaxing it was - good food (brought many italian specialities back home) and do nothing except reading some good books and sleeping ;)

A short vacation

Relaxing also sometimes is necessary. So I decided to take some days off to italy.

Have fun folks.

If any help is needed, Pvt Weiner is responsible as last director available, during Ordo and I are on vacation.
